Crossbow Hunter Safety

To be eligible to purchase a crossbow hunting permit, any person (16 years of age and older) must hold a valid license to hunt big game (either a big game hunting license or an archery license), and must submit proof of having successfully completed an archery hunting education course and a crossbow hunting course or evidence of having previously held adult archery and crossbow hunting permits issued specifically for the purpose of hunting with a crossbow or bow and arrow in this State or any other state, province or country in any year after 1979. When proof or evidence cannot be provided, the applicant may substitute a signed affidavit.

Total Course = 3 hrs. 

  • History & Modern Crossbows = 30 Minutes
  • Responsibility & Ethics = 1 Hour
  • Accessories= 10 Minutes
  • Shooting & Handling = 20 Minutes
  • Special Concerns = 10 Minutes
  • Laws & Safety = 20 Minutes
  • Testing & Review= 30 Minutes

This is a stand alone course.  This course is needed to obtain the permit to use a Crossbow; for Hunting in Maine.  See above for requirements in the first paragraph.  January 1, 2020 started a trail of three years with the use of Crossbow in all hunting season except for Expanded Archery and Black Powder Season by all age groups.

The class will be held on April 16, 2020 from 5:45p-9p at the Irving Tanning Community Center, 62 Elm Street, hartland, maine 04943.  Please bring a pen, pencil, and notebook along with $5.00 for the sponsor fee.
